Is Tik Tok Dead or Alive?
As the potential nationwide ban of TikTok looms closer, here’s a breakdown of the latest developments:
Why Is TikTok Facing a Ban?
The U.S. government has long expressed concerns that TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, poses a national security threat by potentially sharing American user data with the Chinese government. In response, President Joe Biden signed legislation mandating that ByteDance divest from TikTok or face a ban by January 19, 2025.
Supreme Court to Review the Case
TikTok and ByteDance have argued that the legislation infringes on free speech rights and have appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court is scheduled to hear their arguments on January 10, 2025, just days before the ban could go into effect.
What Would the Ban Entail?
If ByteDance does not sell TikTok by the deadline:
The app will be removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Internet service providers will block TikTok, making it inaccessible via U.S. internet browsers.
Potential Sale of TikTok
Billionaire Frank McCourt has expressed interest in purchasing TikTok's U.S. operations. However, this would exclude the app's algorithm, considered intellectual property by the Chinese government.
Donald Trump’s Position
President-elect Donald Trump’s stance on TikTok remains unclear. While his administration previously sought to ban the app, he recently acknowledged TikTok’s influence on younger voters and suggested a more nuanced approach.
Implications for Users and Businesses
The ban could have far-reaching effects on the millions of U.S. users and businesses that rely on TikTok for entertainment and marketing. The app’s future will depend heavily on the outcome of the Supreme Court review and potential policy changes under the new administration.
Scared? Don’t Be
Before Tik Tok there was Music.ly, and before Music.ly there was vine. My point? Even if Tik Tok does become banned in the US, another platform will be made that mimics Tik Tok. In the mean time we can thank Meta for introducing reels which are the same effect as Tik Toks. One really good thing that comes of this if Tik Tok were to be banned for small creators, is that it will be easier to build an audience since everyone is technically going to have to start at 0 again.
